Elizabeth Onusko is the author of Portrait of the Future with Trapdoor, which received the Bryant-Lisembee Book Prize and was published by Red Paint Hill in spring 2016. Her work has recently appeared or is forthcoming in Witness, Best New Poets 2015, Sixth Finch, Fugue, and Redivider, among others. Wing walkers at an airshow reach up their arms You reach for my hand I identify with the sky They disappear into clouds You who have made no study of the atmosphere claim the far away in me is farther now The planes dive Bodies are inverted in mid-air I cannot explain why I am a hopeful person And then there is the question of our hands
