Crawford Variant Literature , 2020 I. … this karmic pain I will always know as heartache until I learn love’s lessons, as if the gates of hell have my name engraved in these waters, this sea where pays says… remember. Afaa Michael Weaver, from “Drowning” The Government of Nature (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2013) II. Jason B. Crawford’s writing exemplifies the notion of permanency versus temporariness. The speaker of the poems is immersed in the tender moments, and recognizes the lasting impact of memory: “See, that/was my childhood, understanding/everything would be temporary.” (from “Dairy Queen”) III.
