i dress her in pixels
after Todd Dillard's “One Hundred Thousand Bells”
check the mailbox. place items in pockets.
return home as quickly as i left.
this is how it begins. with digital clouds
in a digital sky; a warm interior beneath a digital roof.
get changed? the wardrobe prompts, a thimble of
succulents arranged in perpetual bloom on its head.
outside: an imagined spring gives way
to an invented summer. palm trees shiver
coconuts to the ground. pink plumerias pixel
in the breeze. gather hibiscus, farm the vegetables,
deposit bells & bells & bells & bells & bells.
along the coastline, sunfish shadow the brilliant blue
of ocean. dwarf the fishing pole; the hands;
the body — that which reels it in with care.
beside the cranny, i dress her in petal skirts;
in blossom dresses; in fashions lovingly made by claw.
here, there are fossils beneath our feet in abundance.
unbury the possible. replant the pine tree whole.
In lieu of a discussion of the poem, a dedication: for Hannah, my love, & the world you've made possible.
