Self Portrait in a Pew with Sisters
Young enough to believe
the lineup of us in polished shoes
meant power. Only later, seeing
a wink or two —
is your family Catholic? Spring dresses,
white gloves to the wrist, and hats —
we learned how to sit, how not
to yawn. A girl's life
of patience, decorum, hem, skirt, bodice, slip.
